I don’t want to say it out loud, let alone write it, but it’s June already and you know what that means. It’s officially hurricane season! Gone are the days when we brushed it off, leaned into history, and expected our area would be spared.
The 2024 season is still fresh on everyone’s mind, and you don’t have to travel far to see the lasting impact. Some homes remain in disrepair. Scattered blue tarps and extended wait times for roof repairs and tree services serve as a reminder that recovery can be a very long process.
Last year two hurricanes and tropical storm flooding sent this area into somewhat of a tailspin. Our neighborhoods were hit hard. But, true to our Parrish pride, we worked together to clean-up, rebuild, reopen and move forward where possible.
Though we all remain hopeful for a quieter year, we can’t become complacent. Beyond stocking up on basics like water, batteries, flashlights, non-perishable food, and prescriptions, it’s a great time to start your emergency checklist and reevaluate those bigger ticket items too. Gather your insurance paperwork, important documents, pet records, medical cards, etc. and put them in a singular location for easy access. If you have a generator, give it a test run. If you don’t, keep an eye on those summer ads. They’re certain to be on sale soon!
For those who may be considering placing their home on the market, now may be a great time to begin pricing new windows, doors and hurricane shutters for the house. Though big-ticket items, they’re extremely attractive to buyers due to rising insurance costs and overall safety. Great curb appeal and peace-of-mind will always help sell a home. Remember in this market, those extras can make a big difference.
Beyond hurricane planning, we have several significant holidays coming up including Father’s Day! It’s a wonderful time to recognize the dads, granddads, and father figures who make our lives a little better every day. Whether it’s grilling in the backyard, watching a game, or just hanging out, it’s a good time to say thanks and show some love!
Flag Day is also on the horizon. Proudly fly that red, white and blue while remembering that as a community we can accomplish just about anything— including facing hurricanes with preparedness and strength.
