When we talk about the need for more housing in Manatee County, the conversation usually turns to what we should build next. New homes are part of the answer. But lately, I have been thinking just as much about the homes we already have.
Drive through Palmetto, Ellenton or Parrish and you will find older houses that may not make a great first impression. Some need a roof. Some need updated plumbing or electrical work. Others simply need someone willing to look past what is worn out and see what can be repaired.
I am working on one of those homes myself. It has reminded me that bringing a house back is not as simple as a coat of paint. The important work is often the work you cannot see in a photograph: making sure the roof is sound, the water is clean, the systems are safe and the repairs are properly permitted. That work takes time and money, but it is what turns a neglected property into a home someone can feel good about living in.
Restoring an existing house will not solve our housing shortage by itself. And not every older house can be renovated affordably. Still, every sound home we keep in use is one we do not lose. It can also help preserve the streets, neighborhoods and sense of place that make our communities feel like home.
As a Realtor, I love helping people find what comes next. But sometimes what comes next begins with seeing the value in what is already here.
